10/2/19 October Meeting Notes

  • by

Another month goes by and another successful meeting in the books in the cellar at Moon River Brewing Company. We had 24 members show up at the meeting and 4 guests.

Toast: “Cheers to missing the Hurricane!”

Past Events:

  • 8/7 SBL August monthly meeting
  • 8/18 Stammtisch at Scott’s
  • 8/14 Barrel Project; where 11 members filled a 55 gallon bourbon barrel with a Belgium Tripel
  • 8/24 Uber Open Limoncello competition
  • 9/4 SBL meeting canceled due to Hurricane
  • 9/10 Jerald’s Bon Voyage at Two Tides Brewing Company
  • 9/18 SBL 26th Anniversary toast at O’Connell’s Irish Pub
  • 9/21 FeStovall Oktoberfest party at Chris and Theresa’s
  • 10/2 SBL October monthly meeting

Upcoming Events:

Who’s brewing?

  • Scott has “something dark” brewing for O’Dark 30 SBL competition
  • Roger is brewing a Pliney clone
  • TJ will be brewing next week “something dark” for O’Dark 30 SBL competition

SBL portable bar build committee:

Chairman Gene was not at the meeting but all bar hardware, 6 taps, and such have been received. SBL needs some talented craftsmen to help construct. So far we have Gene, TJ, Roger, Neil, Joel, and Carl on this committee.

Barrel Project:

James brought a sample from the barrel for the 11 members who contributed to taste and see if it was ready. While the sample was tasty with a nice woody bourbon flavor that blends well with the Belgium Triple, those in attendance agreed it should sit a little bit longer.

Donation:

Jonathan is donating an immersion chiller for a future raffle for the club. Need to decide what to do with the money raised from this raffle and when to hold it. Possibly help fund the trip to NHC?

Brew Store:

Since Jerald and the Savannah HomeBrew Shoppe is closed, several members inquired about where to get supplies. Atlantic Brew Supply was suggested as a good homebrew store in Raleigh, NC with an $8 flat rate shipping and timely delivery. There is some development by another member to start another homebrew shop in Savannah in the near future. Unfortunately some of the business details are still being worked out with the city so hopefully they will be open soon. In the meantime, if you need immediate small quantities of supplies for emergencies, please contact [email protected], Vince, or utilize the FB group “Savannah Brewers League Members Only” to ask for help. James from Two Tides has also offered up support to the SBL members by tagging on to their shipments via bulk grain buys. Since the club recently did one just before Jerald closed shop, we probably won’t be doing another for 2-6 more months or until a couple members requests this service.

Need a Grain Mill to crush your grains?

Contact Neil or Vince if you need help crushing your grains ([email protected]). Some Homebrew shops will do this for you and ship crushed grains if you request it.

More discussion on 10/12 Veteran Day collaboration:

Kevin from Service Brewing Company has offered a brew day collaboration with SBL on 10/12. Kevin has requested that SBL bring some labor and at least 1 lbs of aromatic hops (6% AA or lower). It sounds like producing the hops should be an easy feat after talking with a couple of members who will be attending. Those showing interest in attending are: TJ, Jeremy B, Roger, Scott, Andrew, and James.

More discussion on 11/2 Learn How To Homebrew Day:

SBL is looking for brewers to set up and brew at Costal Empire Beer Company. Fires should be lit at 11:00 am and wrap up around 5:00 pm. Let your friend’s know and have them come by to check it out. Reminder this is the same day as the Rock and Roll marathon and is far enough out of town to not be affected by this race. Let Neil or TJ know if you plan on brewing. So far Neil, TJ, Jeremy, Roger, Chris S, Issac, and Scott will be attending and brewing.

New SBL Website:

Have you seen the new website? Check it out here! The new website fixes a couple of issues we were having with the older site. There is still a few things left to release on the new site but subscribe and to our site and stay in tune with the latest and greatest info from SBL.

22nd Annual Domras Cup Mead Only competition:

#DomrasCup (official hashtag) will be in Richmond Hill GA at J. F. Gregory Park on 2/1/2020. The entry limit will be set at 200 again this year with a max of 5 entries per person. All SBL members will be given a few days’ notice prior to announcing the registration open to ensure SBL is well represented in our competition. More details to follow so get those mead’s made.

Pro Talk:

Pink and the Moon River team was unfortunately unable to attend as Pink was at GABF. However, we did have both the first GA meadery, Monk’s Meadery, and the first SC meadery, Bee-Town Mead & Cider. After some excellent discussion on mead making (just in time for Domras Cup) these mead makers discussed some of their offerings currently in their tap rooms and the Gold and Bronze medals won at the Mazer Cup by each of them. Expect to see more from these meadery at our 22nd annual Domras Cup.

Poo Brew 2020:

Chris S informed me after the meeting that he is currently in negotiations with the powers that be for the SAV Sanitation Conference on SBL’s participation in the Poo Brew, more details to come. The Poo Brew is an event during the annual Sanitation Conference where Homebrewers utilize reclaimed water to create fantastic brews for attendees to sample.

National Homebrew Conference 2020: TBD (https://www.homebrewcon.org/)

Dues:

Since there was some new guest in attendance there was some questions as to what does a SBL membership entail. Great thing we put it on the website for all to see!

It was great to see everyone again; hopefully a Hurricane won’t intervene in the future.
